New Technology Offers Value-Added Opportunities for Ethanol Industry

Wednesday, November 10, 2004

Eldora, Iowa-An innovative drying system is allowing ethanol plants to create new value-added distillers dried grain (DDG) products. Ethanol plants across the Midwest are putting Global Resource Recovery Organization’s (GRRO) patented Tempest drying technology to the test.

"This technology has some attractive qualities," said Bernie Punt, general manager of Siouxland Energy & Livestock Cooperative in Sioux Center, Iowa. "We wanted to see if we could develop a product that’s higher in protein and energy that can compete with soybean meal. So far the test results have looked favorable."

Rather than use high temperatures to remove moisture from wet DDGs, GRRO's Tempest technology creates "controlled tornadoes" of air within the unit that quickly and efficiently dry DDGs. The end products, which contain 80 to 85 percent dry matter, can be converted into value-added feed products for swine, poultry, beef cattle and dairy cattle.

"The Tempest allows operators to adjust for moisture content every minute, if necessary," said Loran Balvanz, GRRO president and CEO. "It provides a very consistent end product."

Siouxland Energy & Livestock Cooperative, which has an annual ethanol production capacity of 22 million gallons, is also interested in the potential energy savings and improved DDG flowability the Tempest provides. "Regular DDGs can be hard to unload, due to the moisture content, but the dried product from the Tempest has good flowability," Punt said. "Also, because the Tempest is powered by an electric motor rather than natural gas, this makes it more affordable to operate."

GRRO's Tempest equipment is sold in five-ton-per-hour modules. If an ethanol plant needs to process 20 tons of DDGs per hour, for example, it can use four Tempest modules. GRRO is working with finance companies to allow ethanol plants to lease the equipment or take advantage of a rental-purchase program with very little money down.

"The GRRO Tempest drying system is unique and lends itself towards expansion programs," Balvanz said. "We'll continue to work with ethanol plants and feed companies to tracks results and create higher value-added livestock feeds."

Formed in 1999, GLOBAL Resource Recovery Organization (GRRO) is an Iowa-based environmental solutions company that develops and markets cyclonic technologies. These products provide cost-effective, twenty-first century alternatives for waste disposal. GRRO's innovative products and services process a broad range of waste materials into products that have enhanced economic value and can be reused.
